One of my favorite things to do with berries right before they reach their prime is to blend them up into smoothies or my Acai Bowl Recipe, make them into jam, freeze them for later, or make agua fresca! After purchasing 4 pounds worth of strawberries at Costco the other day, I knew I needed to use them up fast. Obviously, on a hot summer day like today, agua fresca was definitely in order.

❤️ Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Cool and Refreshing - Perfect for hot summer days, this drink is light, hydrating, and packed with real fruit.
  • Simple Ingredients - Just five easy-to-find ingredients-no fancy syrups or mixes required.
  • Not Too Sweet - The balance of fresh strawberries, lime, and just a touch of sugar gives this drink a hint of sweetness, without being overly sugary.

🥤What is Agua Fresca?

Agua fresca is Spanish for "fresh water" or "cool water". Made with water and fruit, it is much lighter than juice as it consists mainly of water.

🛒 Ingredients

Ingredients laid out on a gray surface for strawberry agua fresca.
  • Strawberries: Use fresh, not frozen strawberries or you'll end up with a smoothie-like consistency drink (unless you want that consistency!)
  • Lime juice: Use fresh-squeezed lime juice. It has a much better flavor than the bottled kind.
  • Mint: Mint adds the best refreshing flavor to this drink, but you can opt to leave it out if you prefer.

🔄 Substitutions & Variations

  • Sugar: Honey, agave, or another sweetener of your choice can also be substituted for the sugar.

Step 1: Blend all of the ingredients in a blender.

Step 2: Use a fine-mesh strainer to strain out the pulp. Discard.

Step 3: Add additional water and serve over ice.

🌟Expert Tips

  • Use ripe strawberries - The riper the berries, the sweeter and more flavorful your agua fresca will be.
  • Adjust sweetness - Taste after blending and add more sweetener, as needed.
  • Chill before serving - Let the agua fresca sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes so the flavors can meld and the drink is cool and refreshing.
  • Strain well - A fine mesh strainer will give you a smoother drink by removing seeds and pulp.
  • Get creative with garnishes - Add strawberry slices, lime wedges, or extra mint leaves for a pretty presentation.
  • Make it ahead - It keeps well in the fridge for up to 2 days, making it perfect for parties or meal prep.

💭 FAQs

Can I use frozen strawberries?

If you want a traditional strawberry agua fresca, you need to use fresh strawberries. However, frozen strawberries work if you are ok with more of a smoothie consistency!

How long will the agua fresca last in the fridge?

This agua fresca is best enjoyed fresh, but you can store it in the fridge for up to 2 days. Stir before serving, since the drink might separate.

Can I add other fruits to this agua fresca?

Absolutely! You can mix in fruits like raspberries, blueberries, or even pineapple for a twist. Just keep the proportions similar to maintain the balance of flavor.

Can I use sparkling water instead of still water?

Yes, sparkling water will give your agua fresca a fizzy, refreshing kick. Adjust the sugar based on your taste, as sparkling water can sometimes make it taste sweeter.
