Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the sugar, buttermilk, and salt. Continue whisking until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil until it no longer feels grainy.
  3. Remove from heat and add the vanilla and baking soda. The mixture will foam and bubble at this point. Continue stirring until the bubbles slowly reside.
  4. Transfer to a jar for serving.

Notes

1. Use a larger saucepan than you think you'll need. Once you add the baking soda and vanilla, the mixture will become very foamy and bubbly. You definitely don't want it to overflow!
