Ingredients

Units Scale

  • 10 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 4 cups all purpose flour

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon milk or water
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in the microwave. Combine with the eggs, sugar, and salt. Add the milk to a separate bowl and warm in the microwave for a couple seconds, until lukewarm. Dissolve the yeast in the milk.
  2. Add the ingredients, including the flour, to a mixing bowl. Using a dough hook, or your hands, knead the dough until it is elastic and smooth.
  3. Punch down dough and cover the bowl with a damp towel. Let sit in a warm place for at least one hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Prepare a 9x5 in bread pan by greasing with a little bit of butter. Divide the dough into 10 equal balls. Place them into the bread pan laying them side by side, gently flattening and stretching the dough so they all fit. Leave the dough for 20 minutes to rise, covered with a kitchen towel.
  5. Preheat the oven to 370° F. Make the egg wash by mixing the egg yolk, milk or water and salt. Lightly brush the mixture over the dough. Bake the bread for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Allow bread to cool to room temperature before slicing. Serve with whipped ricotta and jam if desired.
  6. Store bread in an airtight container for up to 4 days or freeze for later use.
