This easy homemade hummus is so quick and simple to make. The creamy, light and fluffy dip is the perfect companion to some warm pita bread and fresh veggies.
📍Middle East

Hummus is one of those things that can either be so simple or it can be pretty complex, flavor-wise. Flavors can include anything from red pepper hummus to roasted garlic hummus and carrot hummus to chocolate hummus (I've never tried a dessert hummus, but I think I may need to!), just to name a few. And while I love hummus in many different flavors, one of my favorites is just plain old traditional hummus.
I love how the taste of the lemon juice and the garlic really stands out in traditional hummus. The two flavors just compliment each other so well. Plus, you can never go wrong with serving up traditional hummus with some veggies and fresh pita bread!

For the longest time, I would go to the grocery store and just grab a tub of roasted garlic hummus and think nothing of it. At the time, I thought that stuff was pretty good (and I still do enjoy it!). That was until Jacob and I traveled to the Middle East last year. Let's just say while we were there we had our fair share of hummus. We practically ate hummus for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner. Honestly, it's kind of hard to pass hummus up when it's the real deal! Besides, there's nothing quite like having true, authentic Middle Eastern hummus in a Bedouin camp in the middle of the Jordanian desert.
Nowadays I much prefer homemade hummus (unless I'm in a pinch), which is why I've decided to share a recipe for the real deal with you!

Now I realize hummus at home isn't quite the "real deal", but you can still make some mighty fine homemade hummus with just a blender and a couple of basic ingredients that you probably already have on hand. I honestly can't believe it took me so long to finally learn how to make my own hummus. It really is so much better than anything you'd find at the grocery store, plus it is made with real and healthy ingredients. How can you go wrong with that?

FAQs
Today's recipe is for just a basic hummus, but it can easily be used as a base for adding your own creative touches! If you want a lighter and creamier hummus, try adding in some Greek yogurt. To up the flavor, add in some roasted garlic or roasted red pepper. And for an interesting texture, you can mix in some coarsely mashed chickpeas. The options are truly endless when it comes to hummus!
I love to spread hummus on wraps or enjoy it with carrots, celery, peppers, and pita bread or chips. Or if you want an interesting flavor twist, you can even enjoy hummus with apple slices. And of course you can never go wrong with using it is a dressing on a salad.

Easy Homemade Hummus
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup tahini
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cloves garlic
- ¼ cup lemon juice
- 2 tablespoon cold water
- 1 15 oz can chickpeas drained and rinsed
- paprika fresh parsley, olive oil, for serving
Instructions
- In a blender or food processor, blend the tahini, olive oil, cumin, salt, garlic, and lemon juice until well blended.
- Add the chickpeas and blend until smooth, about 2-3 minutes. Slowly add in the cold water until the hummus reaches the desired consistency.
- Taste and add more salt or lemon juice if desired. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil, dash of paprika and some fresh parsley.
Notes
- You can easily make your own tahini. Simply add 1 cup of sesame seeds to a frying pan over medium heat. Stir the seeds constantly until they reach a very light golden color, about 3-5 minutes. Allow seeds to cool completely and then transfer to a blender/food processor. Blend for 1 minute, then add 2-4 tablespoons of olive oil. Continue blending until smooth.
