Move over maple syrup; there's a new player in town! This mouthwatering buttermilk syrup can be whipped up in 5 minutes with a couple of simple ingredients. I can guarantee that after you have one taste of this, you'll never want to return to artificial maple syrup. Trust me when I say your next breakfast spread will not be complete without this recipe and maybe some homemade Lemon Curd too!

🌟 Top Tip

Make sure you use a larger saucepan than you think you'll need. As soon as you add the baking soda and vanilla, that syrup will foam and bubble up. If you're not careful, it can even overflow! I like to use a medium saucepan when I make this recipe.

🍴 Storage

Store leftover syrup in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. I like to store the syrup in Mason jars. But this syrup dispenser would be a fun way to serve the syrup! Before using the syrup, simply reheat it in the microwave for up to 1 minute.

🥥 Flavor Variations

Want to change it up a bit? This syrup is very flexible and tastes divine with the following extracts/spices added to it. Whichever flavoring you add, I recommend starting with ¼-1/2 teaspoon, adding more as necessary, and tasting after each addition.

  • Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Coconut extract
  • Maple extract
  • Orange extract
  • Cinnamon

💭 FAQs

Can I use a substitute for the buttermilk?

Yes, it's really easy to make a substitute for buttermilk. Pour ½ tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice into a liquid measuring cup. Fill the rest of the cup with milk until it reaches ½ cup. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes or until it looks curdled.

🥞 What to Serve Buttermilk Syrup With

  • Fluffy Japanese Pancakes
  • Crème Brûlée French Toast
  • German Pancakes
  • Classic Crepes
  • Austrian Pancakes

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Whisk in the sugar, buttermilk, and salt. Continue whisking until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil until it no longer feels grainy.
  • Remove from heat and add the vanilla and baking soda. The mixture will foam and bubble at this point. Continue stirring until the bubbles slowly reside.
  • Transfer to a jar for serving.

Notes

1. Use a larger saucepan than you think you'll need. Once you add the baking soda and vanilla, the mixture will become very foamy and bubbly. You definitely don't want it to overflow!
