Homemade dulce de leche has never been easier than with the Instant Pot! All you need is a can of sweetened condensed milk and your trusty pressure cooker, and you'll be enjoying sweet and creamy dulce de leche in no time.

Dulce de Leche in a can.

The more well-known methods of making dulce de leche can take a long time (i.e. boiling, baking.) If you prefer a hands-off, easy way to turn your precious can of sweetened condensed milk to turn into liquid gold, then this is the method for you to try.

All you need is a can of sweetened condensed milk (do not use evaporated milk) and your Instant Pot or pressure cooker, and you'll be enjoying homemade dulce de leche on all of your favorite goodies in no time!

🥘 Ingredients

Can of sweetened condensed milk.
  • Can of sweetened condensed milk: Yes, it's really that simple! Just make sure you don't accidentally use a can of evaporated milk instead. The added sugar in the sweetened condensed milk is what caramelizes and becomes dulce de leche.

🔪 Instructions

A can with a bottle of Goo Gone sitting next to it.
  1. Remove the label from the can of sweetened condensed milk.

2. Place the can into the Instant Pot and fill it with water until the can is completely submerged (the Instant Pot should be filled to capacity.)

Instant Pot set to high pressure 35 minutes.

4. Once the can has completely cooled off, open it and enjoy!

🍴 Storage

An unopened can of dulce de leche can be stored at room temperature for up to 3 weeks. Once opened, dulce de leche should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

🌟 Top tip

Once the can has finished cooking, allow it to cool completely before opening. If you open it while it's still warm/hot, you risk the chance of having pressurized hot caramel spray all over you.

💭 FAQs

What is the difference between caramel and dulce de leche?

Caramel is made with sugar and water, whereas dulce de leche is made with milk and sugar (or sweetened condensed milk.) While they are both different in the way they are made, the two have similar tastes, colors, and textures so they can often be interchanged for each other.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 14 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  • 1. Use Goo Gone to completely remove the label from the can. You don't want any residue left behind as it will stick to the Instant Pot liner and make it hard to clean.
  • 2. Place the sealed can on its side in the Instant Pot. Fill the Instant Pot liner up with water completely to capacity. The can should be submerged with a few extra inches of water on top.
  • 3. Set the pressure to high for 35 minutes.
  • 4. After the 35 minutes, allow the pressure to release naturally.
  • 5. Allow the can to completely cool down before removing from the water and opening, this may take a few hours.
  • 6. Store the unopened can of dulce de leche at room temperature for up to three weeks. Once opened, dulce de leche should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Notes

  • Only cook one can of dulce de leche at a time.
  • Make sure the can is completely submerged with water so that it does not overheat or explode.
  • The can must be cooled completely before opening, or you risk the chance of hot dulce de leche splattering on you.
